Independence Elementary Celebrates Third Annual Eagle Trot

Posted on 10/10/2016

Independence Elementary invited its school community to join them for their 3rd annual Eagle Trot/1-mile Fun Run in September. The event is a great opportunity to support the school as well as a chance to promote health and happiness.

Eagle TrotIndependence Principal Emily Pavia said that goal of the event was not only a PTO fundraiser, “but also a great way to invite our community to join us on a Saturday morning to help reinforce healthy habits.” Participants had two opportunities to get moving and sport their Eagle Trot t-shirt. The first was an early morning 1-mile fun run, and the second was a 5k race, which was professionally timed by Fleet Feet.

Many members of the community enjoyed this opportunity, some so much that they ran the race twice. “We had a participant that came from Kansas City to run with her friend’s daughters,” said Jana Schultz, assistant principal at Independence. “She got first place, and then turned around and re-ran the race to be able to finish with her daughters.”

The event included a DJ, giveaways, and Kona Ice refreshments. The fastest runners – and winners of the race – were honored with medals.

In addition to the race there was also a dance party that went on for the entire day, with music provided by Utopia DJ company. “The kids, parents and staff did lots of dancing before and after the race,” said Schultz. “We even had a Tyrannosaurus Rex dancing. We are happy with how it turned out, and we had the highest participation ever for this event.”

The success of this year’s Eagle Trot shows that exercising can be rewarding in many ways!
