Independence Hosts Music Teachers for World Music Drumming Curriculum

Posted on 09/14/2016
This past summer from July 18 – 22, Independence Elementary hosted 22 music teachers from around the Midwest for training in the World Music Drumming curriculum. World Music Drumming is a curriculum written and developed by Dr. Will Schmidt, Prof. of Music Education at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. World Music Drumming is now in use in over 20,000 schools worldwide.

Through this curriculum, students learn about playing African and Latin American style drums and percussion, and also sing songs and learn about the cultures from which this music originated. World Music Drumming gives students the chance to express themselves musically, work with others towards common goals, and gives students opportunities to be leaders, all in the context of playing authentic African and Latin American music.

Independence music teachers Kelly Brophy and Bill McDade hosted and participated in the week-long workshop. Also attending were district music teachers Shanna Kraemer-Wikowsky (Castlio) and Drew Button (Harvest Ridge). These teachers are integrating the ideas from World Music Drumming into their classroom teaching.

Independence Elementary’s involvement in World Music Drumming was featured in the latest newsletter published by the World Music Drumming organization. The article can be read by clicking here.
