Our local firefighters dedicate their lives to protecting our community, our homes, and our students in FHSD. As part of the nonprofit program, Operation Warm, the Cottleville Firefighters Outreach (CFO) and Central County Fire and Rescue Outreach delivered brand new coats to over 350 students to ensure that they are staying warm this winter.

FHSD teachers and counselors identified the students in need and invited them to pick out a coat in their size. Smiles were shared as each student had a chance to try on different options and then officially mark their chosen coat with their name.

Another student admired the comfy, soft material of the coat’s lining. She shared how the cozy material will keep her warm as she plays hide-and-seek with her friends at recess.

While the day was special for the students, it was meaningful for the firefighters, as well. “As firefighters, we don’t always get to have the best days or get to be a part of people’s best days,” said Garrett Ryan, Executive Director of CFO. “This is an exception to that. It makes us feel very warm inside to know that we’re helping kids and doing something good for the community when it’s not necessarily a bad day.”

The firefighters are used to helping others, but the Operation Warm program allows them to give back in a different way. “Every time you hand out a coat, you get this awesome feeling that you are really making a difference in these young kids lives,” said David Maupin, the Central County Fire and Rescue Outreach Coordinator. “These kids could cure cancer or be our next president, so just giving them a coat one day may change their whole attitude on life.”

Thanks to the generous efforts of our neighborhood heroes, our students will be safe in the cold this season as they play kickball at recess and go sledding on a beloved snow day!
