Independence “Lead with Your Heart” Family Night

What do you get when you combine rock climbing, percussion instruments, and kids who are in charge of their parents for an evening? Well, you get one very fun-filled evening at Independence Elementary. On Monday, Feb. 13, students and families came together for the “Lead with Your Heart” Family Night. This event jump-started the Valentine’s week with exciting activities that included rock climbing, PE, art and music creation, as well as coding. The activities were divided into stations, and students led their parents through and showed them the proper way of doing them!
Independence Launches the Eagle's Closet Program

The students and staff at Independence Elementary are always working to uphold their values, and offering different programs that assist families who need additional support. For the past year, the school has been working to launch the Eagle’s Closet program, which officially opened in January. The Eagle’s Closet was created to help provide families with clothing, shoes, and accessories.
FHSD Students Celebrate 100 Days of School

Elementary students around Francis Howell School District are 100 days smarter as they celebrated reaching the 100th day of the 2016-17 school year this week. They marked the special day with a variety of activities that emphasized the number 100.
Putting a Face to a Song – Independence Elementary Opens New Facebook Page

When musicians began making videos, it really helped put a face on the songs we listened to, stimulating more than just our ears. Independence Elementary is seeking to do the same with their newly launched Independence Choir Facebook Page. The hope is to showcase the accomplishments of the Independence Choir, and to better-facilitate communication between parents and the music program.
FHSD Schools Celebrate National Red Ribbon Week

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) will be dipped in red the week of Oct. 24-28, as schools across the District and the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week, an event dedicated to raising awareness for alcohol, tobacco, drugs and violence prevention. Many FHSD schools will educate students on drug prevention with special events, activities and fun-themed spirit days.
Independence Elementary Celebrates Third Annual Eagle Trot

New FHSD Safety Measures Include Unannounced Intruder Drills

Student safety is always a top priority of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. New this year, FHSD will conduct one unannounced intruder drill at each of our schools
Independence Hosts Music Teachers for World Music Drumming Curriculum

This past summer from July 18 – 22, Independence Elementary hosted 22 music teachers from around the Midwest for training in the World Music Drumming curriculum. World Music Drumming is a curriculum written and developed by Dr. Will Schmidt, Prof. of Music Education at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. World Music Drumming is now in use in over 20,000 schools worldwide.
FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division
Independence Elementary Among Top 10 Fundraising Schools for American Heart Association

Independence Elementary, part of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) and a National School of Character, is never shy to show its philanthropic nature. The school’s staff, students, and parents have partnered many times to raise money for various charities, and have performed other service activities that have brightened the lives of so many around them. But if proof is what you need in order to congratulate these youngsters and their parents, and the teachers and staff who inspire them to build ever greater character, then being named a Top 10 School in Missouri for donations raised for the American Heart Association might be testimony.

Welcome back Independence families! I hope you all had a wonderful summer break spending time with family and friends. We are super excited to have everyone back and are looking forward to getting to know our new students and families! We continue to have new families enroll each day. We have been busy this summer planning and strategizing for the new school year!
One Way Traffic on Independence Road

Eastbound Independence Road will be closed beginning Monday, April 11, 2016. The one lane closure will begin at Wolfrum Road and stretch just beyond Nancy Lane/Rodelle Woods Drive. Construction is tentatively scheduled to end in the spring of 2017.
Independence Student Council Raises Funds for the Ronald McDonald House

During the month of February, Independence Student Council members sold friendship grams and raised over $450. The students decided they would like to help children and families in our area, so they agreed upon the Ronald McDonald House.
